NOTE: This position's primary duties are carried out at the Fair Park campus.
Position Summary
The Collections Volunteer will help care for and manage the collections (fossils, minerals, taxidermy, books, archives, etc) that belong to the research collection of the Museum. All work will be done at Fair Park facility unless otherwise instructed.
Responsibilities
Fulfill one or more of the following opportunities: database work, cataloging new specimens, housing specimens, mystery solving, and updating the inventory. Catalog all new acquisitions and track specimens as they go on exhibit or on loan. Maintain a safe and controlled environment for the storage of the museum’s irreplaceable assets.
Skills and Abilities
Collections volunteers must have patience, attention to detail, and the flexibility to meet the needs of the day. Must be good at typing, critical reading, proofreading, data entry, and spelling.
Training Required
- Orientation: 4 hours
- Orientations held monthly
- Sign up for orientation of choice at initial interview
- Additional training with the Collections Manager.
Training Schedule
To be determined by the Collections Manager.
Assignment Schedule
Schedule to be agreed upon and determined at the discretion of the Collections Manager. Collections Department is open to volunteers from 10am-4pm WEEKDAYS ONLY.
Time Commitment
Prefer once weekly for a period of one year.
