Position Summary

Bio Lab Volunteers assist guests with the hands-on experiments and activities, programming and laboratory logistics in this interactive exhibit located in the Being Human Hall. In addition to enhancing the guest experience, you  will assist the Bio Lab staff with the maintenance of various laboratory supplies and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with museum guests in the Bio Lab, providing assistance with  experiments, demonstrations and information
  • Assist with guest questions regarding exhibits and general museum information
  • Assist with monitoring and controlling Bio Lab public and school guest entrance and capacity
  • Provide laboratory support by assisting with preparing solutions and biological materials, maintaining bacterial cultures, cleaning and restocking Bio Lab supplies
  • Assist with Bio Lab daily operations, including, but not limited to, clean-up procedures, restocking of work station supplies, and reporting Bio Lab maintenance needs
  • Reports consistent Bio Lab attendance records

  • High level of enthusiasm and initiative
  • High interest in and/or knowledge of science
  • Ability to clearly communicate information and activities with guests of various ages and backgrounds
  • Demonstration of excellent customer service skills 
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a variety of settings
  • High attention to detail and organization
  • Must be consistent, punctual and able to work with minimal supervision

Training Required

  • Orientation: 4 hours
    • Orientations held monthly
    • Sign up for orientation of choice at initial interview
  • Bio Lab Training: 1 hour

Assignment Schedule

The usual shift schedules are listed below:

NOTE; Shift times may occasionally change due to special events

  • Monday-Saturday: 9:30am-1:30pm and1:00pm-5:00pm
  • Sunday: 11:30am -2:30pm and 2:00pm-5:00pm
  • First Thursday of each month: 4:30pm-9:00pm

Time Commitment

Two shifts per month (8 hours) for a period of one year.
